Sanita Co-Sponsors Annual ‘Walk with Al Youbouh’

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Brand mascots and a ‘fun stop’ create ambiance at event for Al Younbouh Rehabilitation Center for Mentally Disabled Adults.

Each year, on a Sunday morning during the month of May, walkers fill the streets of Old Jounieh in Lebanon in an annual 6-km event known as ‘Walk with Al Younbouh’.

In support of initiatives at Al Younbouh Rehabilitation Center for Mentally Disabled Adults, based in Ghazir, companies and families came together this year on 13 May.

Sanita Ltd., consumer products manufacturer and co-sponsor of the walk, opted to focus on entertainment.

Employees, dressed as colorful product mascots, wooed the children as Sanita’s well-known Tie-Bag, Gipsy, and Happies brands.

A decorated fire engine also communicated Sanita’s well-known slogan, ta ydall el 7ala 3anna or ‘to keep our country beautiful’. The starting location of the event, Fouad Chehab Stadium in Jounieh, was dotted with disposable trash containers which Sanita donated.

Throughout the walk, short breaks featured performances by Al Younbouh members and sponsor events. Sanita’s “fun stop” energized children with music, dancing, and soap bubbles, as they headed into the last stretch of the walk.

Masterpak Horticultural Films Introduced in Ethiopia

INDEVCO Flexible Packaging Division Hosts Horticultural Growers in Ethiopia.

Fifty growers and members of the Ethiopian Horticulture Producers and Exporters Association (EHPEA) attended a presentation about greenhouse films and other horticultural plastics produced by Masterpak, PE-film manufacturer based in Lebanon.

Presentation of Masterpak Horticultural Films

NOOTOL General Industry, owned by Woizero Agitu Wodajo, represents INDEVCO in Ethiopia. Tewodros Gebretsadik of NOOTOL organized the presentation, which took place 12 June 2007 at the Hilton Addis Ababa Hotel.

Ato Tsegaye Abebe, EHPEA Chairman and an exporter of flowers and beans himself, welcomed guests.

Members of INDEVCO Flexible Packaging Division then continued the presentation.

Raji Bitar, Napco Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, briefly described INDEVCO Group’s worldwide presence.

Râny Sfeir, Agricultural Engineer, then provided details about Masterpak greenhouse covers and horticultural film portfolio, explained how each product could meet plantations’ requirements, and provided solutions to growers’ problems.

The presentation was followed by a buffet.

Ethiopia’s Rapidly Growing Floriculture Sector

In less than a decade, Ethiopia has come into a bright international spotlight, given its rapidly developing horticultural industry and substantial government support for the sector.

According to Tsegaye, floriculture “is growing at almost 200 per cent… By the end of 2007, we expect the land developed for flower production to reach between 1,250-1500 hectares,” compared to the current 750 hectares under greenhouses and 150 hectares for under tunnel or open-field production.1

The cut flower industry is one of Ethiopia’s largest exporters

The EHPEA, with 70 member companies, organizes trade fairs and lobbies the government. The association’s members produce and export many varieties of roses, gypsophila, hypericum, limonium and carnations, as well as such cuttings as chrysanthemums and geraniums.

While floriculture is currently the star sector, the government realizes the potential value of fruit and vegetable production and export. It has published step-by-step procedures for investing in the horticultural sector in Ethiopia.2

Before and after the presentation, Bitar and Sfeir visited and evaluated horticultural film applications on EHPEA member farms around the capital, Addis Ababa, which aptly translates to “new flower”.

Corrugated Lining Protects Against Biscuit & Wafer Breakage

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Manufacturers say goodbye to crumbs with Unipak's micro-flute linings.

Frustrating, isn’t it, when you open a new pack of biscuits or your favorite wafers, only to find them crushed?

With concerns for costs and the environment growing, manufacturers are continually reviewing the effectiveness and environmental impact of their packaging.

However, when ineffective packaging forces customers to buy crumbs, confectionary manufacturers may lose both revenue and reputation.

A viable option to widely-used polyfoils is microflute light-weight carton board or single-face linings, produced by Unipak sal in Lebanon. Used as internal packaging, E or B-flute corrugated lining is strong enough to keep biscuits, cookies, and wafers whole – the way customers like them best.

Fluted linings for confectionary products are made of 100% recyclable, food-approved material. Available in brown kraft, white kraft, or brown / white kraft, linings may be printed in up to four colors.

INDEVCO to Establish Recycling Company in Saudi Arabia

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Centers in Jeddah and Dammam will process PE film-grade waste and reformulate it into resin granules.

The decision is final. By the end of Q4 2007, INDEVCO Group will launch plastics recycling operations on the east and west coasts of Saudi Arabia. The company, to be headquartered in Jeddah, will collect plastic waste – particularly polyethylene (PE) film-grade plastic waste – in Jeddah and Dammam.

Plastic Waste Sources

Polyethylene (PE) film-grade waste will originate from four main sources:

  • existing customers of group members who generate suitable PE waste
  • sister companies within INDEVCO group
  • public and private-sector petrochemical companies
  • waste collectors who sort plastics
The materials will be brought to the factory and segregated into grades, such as clear, colored, heavy print, solid waste, and more. Plastic film will then be shredded and solid waste crushed. After being washed, the waste will be re-processed into recycled PE granules of varying grades.

Uses of Recycled Plastic Granules

Clear, milky and colored granules will be reutilized to produce non-food PE films for sacks, garbage bags, mulch film, and other applications.

Further, the company will compound recycled pellets with specific additives to produce special grades for cost-saving purposes.

Saudi Arabia is one of the largest producers of plastic in the world. Recycling is gaining attention in the kingdom, as evidenced by the first international Recycling & Waste Management exhibition held in Riyadh in March 2007.

Sanita Receives CE Mark Accreditation for Medical Disposables

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Medical underpads and adult diapers from Sanita comply with European standards.

As of June 2007, the CE mark will appear on medical underpads and adult diapers produced by Sanita sal, based in Zouk, Lebanon. The CE mark is a mandatory European marking for certain product groups to indicate conformity with the essential health and safety requirements set out in European Directives.1

Consultants Europe BV approved the CE mark for Sanita’s medical disposables after analyzing and validating their technical specifications.

Sanita can now sell its medical disposables to hospitals and medical institutions across Europe.

Emile Georgi, INDEVCO Quality Assurance Manager, spearheaded the project.

“Sanita has made a major step forward with this accreditation”, explains Georgi. “We have gained a competitive edge in the region and can now compete at the same level of European manufacturers.”

By the end of 2007, Sanita plans to adhere to the EEC General Safety Regulations for all products. In addition to medical disposables, Sanita manufactures personal care hygiene disposables, household tissue and plastic consumables, catering foodservice disposables and janitorial supplies.

Digital Flexo Plates Offer Advantages to INDEVCO's Packaging Converters

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Repro Center’s pre-press services go digital for high graphics and fine detail print jobs.

In 1994, printing needs within INDEVCO packaging companies in Lebanon led the group to establish Repro Center as an in-house pre-press division of Unipak sal, corrugated manufacturer located in Halat.

The following year, the German pre-press industry introduced digital flexo plate making as a way to improve flexographic print quality and, thus, gain market share over competitors. The trend was quickly and widely accepted.

Today, more than 50% of the flexo plates Repro Center delivers to its customers are digital. The division works 24 hours per day, six days per week to supply sister companies in Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the US, as well as companies outside the group in the Levant area.

Digital Flexo Plate Making

In 2004, Repro Center installed an Esko CDI Advance 4060, considered by some the world’s most advanced digital flexo imaging device.1

Over 90% of all digital flexo plates around the world are imaged on a Cyrel Digital Imager (CDI).

Using Dupont™ Cyrel® technology, Repro Center images large-scale digital flexo plates up to 50 x 80 inches (203 x 127 cm) in around 40 minutes.

Not all packaging, however, requires high quality printing. Rather, the choice of digital plates is related to process color, high quality graphics, and need for fine detail. In these cases, digital flexo plates offer key advantages.

Higher Print Quality

The CDI hardware has allowed flexo printers on corrugated and flexible packaging to achieve superior quality and print consistency quite comparable to offset or gravure.2

Repro Center’s digital plates offer better color registration, sharper dot reproduction, more precise color gradations, and a wider tonal range. Because digital plates print only the tip of dots, press impression and dot gain are much lower than with analog plates.

Color shades between 1 - 99% of full color are possible, compared to ranges of film plates for flexible packaging (5 - 93%) and corrugated packaging (12 - 93%).
3 Scratches, dust and other imperfections on film are simply eliminated with the digital process.

Workflow Control

Pre-press businesses like Repro Center share digital files across locations and create any number of standard plates of consistently high quality. With greater control of files, images are easily altered on the computer and workflow increasingly transitioned to fully-digital proofing for job approvals and final proofs.

Less Waste

In an environmentally friendly production process, Repro Center uses no film when making digital flexo plates. In comparison, conventional plate making produces solid waste from generations of film, as well as chemical waste from film processing.

The digital present is changing the way INDEVCO plants do business. In the process, packaging converters are leveraging on the advantages of digital flexo plates to deliver what their customers value: consistent printing and predictable turn-around.
