COMPACT Initiates ISO 22000 Certification Process

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Dammam-based flexible packaging manufacturer raises the bar with higher food safety standards.

A supplier to multinational and Middle Eastern food companies, Napco Composite Packaging Technology Ltd (COMPACT) of Dammam, Saudi Arabia is integrating ISO 22000 into its total quality management system.

ISO 22000 sets requirements for any organization in the food supply chain, including producers of packaging materials.

Chadi Radi, Quality Manager at COMPACT, explains, "As a food packaging supplier, we align with market requirements, that are continuously demanding better flexibility and faster responsiveness, higher food safety standards and environmental friendly products."

COMPACT is working with Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance on the certification, which should be finalized in late 2009. Throughout the process, COMPACT will implement its food safety management system to include four main elements: interactive communication, system management, pre-requisite programs, and HACCP principles.1

Interactive Communication

Consumers are best protected when all participants in the food chain communicate clearly about potential safety hazards and provide control measures to deal with such hazards.

This requires COMPACT to recognize its role relative to other suppliers within the entire chain, in order to communicate effectively and to deliver safe products to consumers.

System Management & Pre-Requisites

COMPACT will incorporate ISO 22000 standards within its overall management system framework, which includes ISO 9001 and HACCP.

HACCP Principles
"In the safety and hygiene aspect of this process," describes Radi, "we'll reorganize our infrastructure and product handling to meet international regulations and to build product confidence in international markets."
Key to effective food safety management system, COMPACT will integrate principles of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system in order to identify, assess, and control hazards which occur in the food chain. Hazard control strategies combine pre-requisites and the company’s HACCP plan.

Radi concludes, "This initiative impacts COMPACT’s future business performance and growth. Moreso, it affects our people by preparing them to exploit new avenues for improvement. We've adopted this focus on people from the philosophy of our mother company, INDEVCO.”

Easternpak Achieves BRC & GMP Certificates

Saudi-based corrugated packaging manufacturer has further expanded its Food Safety Management system.

As of today,
Easternpak has received its latest management certificates from TUV NORD CERT GmbH. Signed 12 November 2007, the certificates confirm Easternpak’s conformity with auditing and certification procedures for BRC / IOP and Good Manufacturing Practices.

"We're motivated to obtain accreditations", says Pierre Akl, Easternpak General Manager,

"because of globalization and the growing awareness of food safety management among food-oriented customers. Our goal is to ensure that Easternpak's system is in line with the footprints of well-known multinationals, such as Cadbury, Coca Cola, Nestlé, and others. Within the Paper & Containers Division of our mother company, INDEVCO Group, we'll also transfer our management system to sister plants in Lebanon and Egypt, in order to maintain excellence."
British Retail Consortium (BRC / IOP) Certification

Easternpak meets the technical standards for companies manufacturing and supplying food packaging materials for retailer branded products.

GMP International Good Manufacturing Practice for Corrugated & Solid Board

Easternpak has been approved in its manufacturing of various types of corrugated carton boxes for food contact, specialty related products, point of purchase (POP) stands and pre-printed paper rolls.

GMP is a foundation for effective food safety management, requiring basic steps to prevent or control microbial, chemical or physical contamination. Steps include written procedures for how to control food safety hazards and maintain a hygienic environment, employee training, operational controls, and environmental controls.

Easternpak completed Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification in early 2006, committed to supplying corrugated packaging that is 100% free from biological, chemical, or physical hazards. HACCP is an internationally recognized food safety system that prevents problems in producing, processing and handling food.

According to Ganesh Shankar, ISO & HACCP Management Representative,
“The recent BRC/IOP and GMP accreditations will help us prove our continuous striving to ensure a hygienic environment at Easternpak and our commitment to supplying hazard-free corrugated products to food-oriented customers across the Middle East."

Company Background

Established in 1994, Easternpak Ltd. is an ISO 9001:2000-certified manufacturer of recyclable corrugated packaging solutions, and the only HACCP certified corrugated manufacturer in the GCC and MENA regions. Our mother company, INDEVCO Group, is the sole licensee in the Middle East of OTOR packaging systems. Masterpak Contributes to its Own during Holiday Season

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Flexible packaging manufacturer promotes concern for each other with personal donations and an annual 'Christmas Round'.

It's the season for giving at Masterpak, with two initiatives contributing to fellow employees.

"Our group's President, Neemat Frem, encourages us to promote good ideas and actions and to ignore the negative… we must build on the positive, especially during this holiday season,” says Wissam Moubarak, General Manager.

A tradition since 1999, Masterpak employees contribute to a common collection box. Masterpak then matches employee donations and redistributes the total among employees with special needs.

The collection box, which started as a small initiative, has grown. Even employees who have relocated to Egypt or Saudi Arabia with mother company, INDEVCO Group, continue to contribute each year.

Further, for 2007, Masterpak's management team, led by Production Manager Maroun Aoun, kicked off a new idea: the “Christmas Round". On Christmas Eve, a group of managers and employees go to the homes of select members of the Masterpak family, offering clothing, food and warm smiles.

Maroun Aoun, the leader of the Christmas Round, described:
“It's one of the best Christmas's I've had in years! Giving to others is a great gift by itself. It makes you feel happy; it teaches the true meaning of love and empathy. I hope next year we'll be able to visit even homes with a smile and a message of peace!”

Company Background

Established in 1979 in Lebanon, Masterpak manufactures plastic flexible packaging products and offers PE film solutions for the agricultural, construction, consumer, food and beverage, and industrial sectors. Products are destined for the local market, as well as Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
