INDEVCO Group President Featured in La Revue du Liban

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

Source: La Revue Du Liban, Banques et Assurances Section, 21 - 28 November 2009
Posted by: Nadine Fenianos

La Revue du Liban, a weekly Lebanese magazine, featured INDEVCO Group President and CEO in its issue of 21 - 28 November 2009.

During the interview, Neemat G. Frem emphasizes the importance of INDEVCO's corporate mission "What's good for the community is good for the company", which has guided the group's daily operations since 1956.

In addition, he indicates that the group's manufacturing plants in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt export around 65% of their products to Europe, Africa and Arab countries.

Frem states that INDEVCO Group has overcome the global financial crisis and is optimistic about the group's future growth.

Interview with Neemat Frem in La Revue du Liban

Read the full interview in French below.

Il existe depuis 50 ans et a servi à sa croissance: "what's good for the community is good for the company".

Interstate Paper Pursues Energy Saving Initiatives

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

The United States Department of Energy has recently recognized the Interstate Paper, a US paper mill in Riceboro, Georgia, for participating in an energy savings assessment in 2008.

The assessment was completed collaboratively between the mill and the
Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech. This assessment focused primarily on Interstate Paper’s “Power Island” and the two main steam and power users in the paper mill, the pulp mill, and the paper machine.

The assessment team evaluated the operation and energy savings potentials in the following processes:

The black liquor recovery boiler
The biomass bubbling fluidized bed boiler
The power boiler
The evaporators
The digesters
Condensate return - paper machine

Interstate Paper received the 2008 assessment results and they included the following “Best Practices”, “Continuous Improvements Process”, and “Strategic and Long-Term Recommendations/Opportunities” criteria:

Long-Term Objective for the use of alternative fuel in the BFB Boiler and for
recovering harvesting waste

Best Practice-Continuous Improvement Process for reducing boiler blow-down
and for the increase of condensate recovery

Continuous Improvement Process for improving steam distribution, valves, and
vessels insulation

Strategic and Long-Term Recommendations/Opportunities for installing
condensing turbine to increase power generation

Overview of Interstate Paper Energy Saving Initiative

In 2007 and early 2008, Interstate Paper took the initiative and continued to work diligently toward achieving more energy savings ideas and better practices through day-to-day operations and long term capital planning and feasibility studies. The mill engaged its own personnel, as well as suppliers, to identify energy savings potentials in the mill.

One of the suppliers, Goulds ITT, was hired to conduct a pump/energy audit. As a result, a total of 26 pumps across the mill were identified for potential energy savings through the implementation of a system upgrade, including fitting these pumps with an inverter duty high efficiency motor, as well as a variable frequency drive system, in lieu of the conventional fixed speed motors and re-circulation valves.

The project savings would primarily come from reducing electrical consumption per pump/motor, and improving the reliability of each application by reducing any system vibration affecting piping, valves, foundations, couplings, and eliminating re-circulation valves maintenance. In some cases, the upgrade would virtually eliminate pump failures due to excessive vibration and extend the life of mechanical components such as valves, piping, fittings, etc.

The paper mill carefully evaluated each application from an applicability and savings standpoint to make certain that savings were attainable and the application would improve beyond just energy savings.

Based on the mill’s own assessment, eight critical pumps with the highest returns were chosen for the upgrade. As a result, a $1.0MM project was submitted to the company owners and the board, and was approved in early 2008. This system upgrade affected the pulp mill, paper machine, and power house.

Phoenix Machinery Receives Lebanese Industrial Research Achievements Award

For OUTBOUND home page, go to http://outbound.indevcogroup.com

INDEVCO Group affiliates support Lebanese industrial research conducted at universities and academic institutions.

INDEVCO member companies, Phoenix Machinery, received recognition awards from the Lebanese Industrial Research Achievements (LIRA) Program during its 9th annual forum on 19 November 2009. The LIRA program grants awards for the first time and will continue to honor projects' supporters and students annually. INDEVCO Group is a founding member of the LIRA program.

Phoenix Machinery's Award

Phoenix Machinery has been supporting research projects proposed by universities and academic institutions in Lebanon since the LIRA program launched in 1997.

Phoenix Machinery General Manager, Rabih Osta, explains,

Being a member of INDEVCO Group, we believe in and support the power of scientific and technological research and industrial innovation. We focus on the importance of talented engineers and encourage creative collaboration between the private sector and engineering and technical colleges towards a knowledge-based economy.

Phoenix sponsored and supported the following research projects since 1997:

Core making machine
Toilet over wrapper / stretch wrapper
Roll cutter
Metallurgical furnace
Movable solar detector
Command using electrical current

Every year, this annual forum including the Conference of Industrial Research & Development, and the Exhibition of Industrial Research Achievements brings together academic and industrial expertise. This event provides an important opportunity for industry, academia and research centers, both public and private, to meet and exchange their research findings.

The LIRA program encourages university-industry cooperation, matches university activities/research with industry needs, seeks industrial projects for proposed university projects, offers a national platform for potential new products and services, helps engineering and science students in developing their research projects prototypes and provides industrial training.

Lebanese Industrialists Research Achievement Program Overview
Since 1997, LIRA program provides researchers in universities and vocational schools career opportunities that suit their capabilities and potential.

Furthermore, the program has brought great achievements for the national industrial sector by increasing its competitiveness, creating higher added value products, developing production lines, and by introducing locally-made low cost high-tech production equipment.

The cooperation in 1997 amongst the Association of Lebanese Industrialists, the National Council for Scientific Research, a handful of universities in Lebanon, and with the support of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, a German-based public institute foundation, resulted in the initiation of an annual forum: the Conference of Industrial Research & Development, and the Exhibition of Industrial Research Achievements.
