MASTERPAK Co-Organizes ‘Geo Membrane Liners in Water Conservation’ Conference

The conference, which addressed the uses of geo-membranes in conserving water, took place on 27 January 2011 at NDU campus in Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon.

Polyethylene film manufacturer, MASTERPAK, co-organized the ‘Geo Membrane Liners in Water Conservation’ conference in coordination with the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water and Notre-Dame University (NDU) Water Energy & Environment Research Center (WEERC).

The welcome speech by Amal Merhi, MASTERPAK Marketing Manager, emphasized the importance of water, a non-renewable life source, and the critical situation of water availability. Merhi also introduced the conference topics and speakers.

Co-organizer speakers during the opening session included Souheil Matar, Vice President, NDU Cultural Affairs & Public Relations; Dr. Assaad Eid, Vice President, NDU Sponsored Research & Development; and Dr. Fadi Comair, Lebanese Ministry of Energy & Water General Director of Hydraulic & Electric Resources and NDU Water Energy & Environment Research Center Director.

Georges Hanna, consultant to INDEVCO Group, also spoke at the opening session detailing water conservation initiatives by MASTERPAK and INDEVCO Group in Lebanon and the Middle East.

Reda Ashkar, BMC Gulf General Manager and Geosynthetics MEA Conference Chairman, covered geo-membrane application, including how to design, install, test, and maintain liners. He then explained different geo-membrane projects undertaken in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region.

Peter Riegl, General Manager of AGRU Business Lining Unit in Austria, presented lining projects carried out in global markets and the benefits of polyethylene (PE) liners versus polyvinyl chloride (PVC) liners.

The conference ended with a question and answer session with audience members.
