Lebanese American University Inaugurates Frem Civic Center

The inauguration of Frem Civic Center realizes a step towards enhancing civic education and commitment to community in Lebanon.

A dream of the late Georges N. Frem, founder and former Chairman of INDEVCO Group, came true, as the Frem Civic Center was inaugurated at Lebanese American University (LAU) in Jbeil, Lebanon on 2 June 2011.

The Frem Civic Center is an outcome of the joint effort between the Frem family and LAU to nurture the multicultural society, mold and shape the future minds of Lebanon and create responsible citizens.

Built in the spirit of traditional Lebanese architecture, the center’s 5 stories of classrooms, lecture halls, and meeting rooms are furnished with the latest technologies and equipment. The center will hold conferences aimed at fostering constructive dialog among students and will serve as a central gathering place for important university events.

The Frem Civic Center Inauguration Ceremony

The inauguration ceremony brought together members of the Frem family, LAU President, Joseph Jabra, prominent government and public service officials, business and academic representatives.

Also present at the event were Hayat Frem, wife of the late Georges Frem; Neemat Frem, President and CEO of INDEVCO Group; Chafic Frem,  INDEVCO Chairman; Antoine Frem, INDEVCO Vice Chairman and Interstate Resources, Inc. CEO & Chairman; and Rabih Frem, INDEVCO Vice-Chairman.

Attending Lebanese officials included Salim Warde, Minister of Culture representing Lebanese President Michel Sleiman; Deputy Dr. Walid El Khoury, representing President of Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri; Hassan Mneimneh, Minister of Higher Education representing Prime Minister, Saad Hariri; Colonel Jean Haddad, representing Elias El Murr, Minister of Defense; Mustafa Hamdan, Former Head of Lebanese Presidential Brigade representing Ali Abdallah, Minister of Youth and Sports.

Inauguration Speeches

The inauguration of the Frem Civic Center commenced with a welcome speech from Christian Oussi, LAU Executive Manager of Media and PR.

Dr. Joseph Jabra, LAU President, then traced Georges Frem’s journey through the establishment of INDEVCO and the impact of his philosophy on the growth of a multinational group.

Furthermore, Jabra discussed Georges Frem’s dedication to developing human resources in order to build an effective organization. His commitment to society and family motivated him to create a center that would strengthen commitment to the nation.

Antoine Frem then spoke on behalf of the Frem family, expressing his belief in the synergy between business and education and in the need for companies and universities to work together for the public good.

Furthermore, Frem explained business’ role in helping academic institutions reduce extremism and corruption and in fostering intrinsic beliefs in human rights and values, equality, dignity and commitment to freedom.

Antoine Frem has worked closely with LAU for 25 years as a member of the university’s
Board of Trustees. Neemat Frem recently became a member of LAU’s International Board of Advisors.
